What happens in therapy?

If this is your first experience with a psychologist, Alex will help guide you through obtaining information about your background and the reason for your seeking therapy

Some people may feel very anxious either about attending therapy or about talking about particular events, it is important to note that you don’t have to discuss everything in the first session. Therapy is a process that often evolves over time.

It is good to arrive about 15 minutes early for your first appointment so you have plenty of time to find a park and to complete paperwork.

Psychologists use a range of therapy tools and techniques which will be explained to you by Alex during the therapy process.  Alex will tailor therapy to suit you or if you are parent/caregiver, Alex will tailor therapy for your child. Homework is a typical part of therapy as working on your goals in between sessions helps speed up your progress towards obtaining goals. Homework can include:

-  reading relevant books,

- scheduling in self-care activities,

- completing paper resources

- practicing skills such as meditating

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is therapy between one person and a therapist.

For child patients, Alex will generally  meet with parents and children during an individual session, however, this depends on the age of the child and the presenting concerns.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is generally held in a larger therapy space and can include up to nine participants.
